At first listen, The Blackwater Fever evokes a swampy, dirty sound that conjures up the dark, mysterious American South; dense and heavy forested places you don’t want to happen upon alone. Their full sound quickly creates the illusion that every band member – four, maybe five— operate on high octane.
So imagine my surprise. The Blackwater Fever is Australian, not American. Band members? They’re a power duo.

The Blackwater Fever’s In Stereo is their second full-length album and if it were a young boy, at a guess, there would be Nirvana posters on his walls, his father’s John Lee Hooker tapes in his cassette deck and some of The Kills’ or BRMC’s CDs lying around the floor of his room. Perhaps lyrics by Tom Waits or Nick Cave would be scrawled into his notebooks, and his father’s whiskey would surely be stashed under his bed. He would tell a decent joke as well as a decent lie, and would be feared and loathed by the fathers of many teenage girls. That said he’d be good fun. (more…)
The Blackwater Fever may just be two guys – Shane Hicks and Andrew Walter – but the potency of their second album, In Stereo, would have you believe that more people would be needed to create such a strong atmospheric sound. From the very first listen, it is strikingly evident that Hicks and Walter are not here to follow trends or become the ‘cool’ band of 2011. Ignoring all trends, In Stereo is and honest album that is 100 percent The Blackwater Fever and nothing more. (more…)
